\ History

Voerendaal measures in total about 3142 ha and is situated in the green area between Heerlen, Simpelveld, Wittem, Gulpen, Valkenburg and Nuth.

The municipality, formed out of five villages, has a long history. It was already inhabited during the Roman Empire. This is proven by found items like a bathhouse, small temples and a pond. In the proximity of the today's farmstead Ten Hoeve even the remnants of a former Roman mansion were found (see also at Villa Rustica).

On 1 January 2000 the municipality Voerendaal counted 13,061 inhabitants. Roughly this number can be distributed over the different villages as follows:

    Voerendaal 3117
    Klimmen 3448
    Kunrade 3879
    Ubachsberg 1594
    Ransdaal 1023

    The municipality flag

In the meeting from 20 February 1995 the local council accepted a new municipality flag.

Here follows a description of the flag. Starting point of the new flag is the name Voerendaal. The name Voerendaal is formed by the two words “Voeren” and “Daal”. The word “Voeren” designates according to scientists an undeep, crossable place in a brook. The designation attributed to the Frankish Word “Forda”. Other scientists mean that the word descends of the German word “Furt”, which has, however, the same meaning as the Word “Forda”.

    The Word “Daal” means valley.

Five strips in the colours yellow and blue pull horizontal through the flag in the relationship 1:1: 2: 1: 1. In the centre on yellow background are three red lilies. The two blue strips represent two brooks by a yellow valley flow. The lilies are the most important element of the former municipality Klimmen. The from origin (French) lilies points to the historical background of Klimmen, which belonged in the period around 968 to the possession of the French queen Gerberga.

    The arms of municipality

Origin/explanation: Until 1777 Voerendaal actually always counted to Heerlen, with an interruption of 7 years. From 1627 to 1634 it was in the possession of Willem van Cortenbach. Starting from 1777 Voerendaal has its own council. Because Heerlen (and concomitantly Voerendaal) was one of the main jury seats of Valkenburg, in the coat of arms the lion of Valkenburg is visible. The shown person is the holy Laurentius, the church patron. The municipality council at that time had inquired in first instance the coat of arms reflected, but the high council of Nobles assumed that, a holy person had to stand on the honour place and turned thereby the illustration. Therefore Laurentius stands in the left field of the coat of arms.

    The municipality logo

The arm of the municipality was used until 1991 for writing paper of the old municipality Voerendaal. From 1 January 1992 starting the new logo was accepted. It is used now for all official documents of the municipality. On the main side of the municipality web page you can see the new logo. The “v” in logo stands for the initial letter of Voerendaal, while the four lozenges symbolize the four largest centres of the municipality.
