On a green spot between the restless city of Heerlen and the tourist attractions of Valkenburg you can find, embedded in a scenic attractive region, the municipality of Voerendaal. Besides the 3 nature areas (Kunderberg, Putberg and Vrouwenheide) in Voerendaal you can find different monumental buildings, like some historical castles, farmsteads and mansions.
Some interesting facts about the most important buildings are as followed:
Laurentiuskerk (Voerendaal): inaugurated in 1049 by Pope Leo IX. The tower is a remnant of that time, even as the altar stone and the font inside of the church. The nave was built in 1840; the altar rails with side arc are dated from 1915/1916.
Bernarduskerk (Ubachsberg): built in 1841, expanded in 1924. The church is the highest situated church in the Netherlands.
Remigiuskerk (Klimmen): Roman basilica with middle arc and a tower from the 19th century. Completely built of special stone that is originally from the region of Kunrade (Kunradersteen). Restored in 1985.
Kasteel Cortenbach: only the wall and two round towers are the remnants of the old castle (13th century). The present castle was built in 1650 and was rebuilt in 1776.
Hoeve Cortenbach: also originally from the 13th century. In 1640 rebuilt after a big fire. It has a monumental portal.
Kasteel and hoeve Puth: castle and farmstead were built originally in the 14th century. The present castle and farmstead were built in the 17th century. Of architectural interest are the ogival vaults of the farmstead.
Kasteel and hoeve Haeren: the original buildings are probably from the 12th century. After a heavy fire in 1742 the whole complex was rebuilt. The mansion creates together with the farmstead an integral whole and was build round an inner courtyard.
Kasteel and hoeve Rivieren: mansion from the 16th century with tower made of mergelsteen (loam stone), gradate-like gables and a gothic fresco under the roof. Most of the complex was built between 1719 and 1735. On both sides of the complex is a pavilion situated by the gates.
Kasteel and hoeve ‘t Huiske: canal-surrounded mansion, originally from the middle ages, but mostly rebuilt in the 19th century. It was built in U-shape with a higher levelled pavilion at the port from around 1800.
